Top 5 Area Games for Week 5

Week 5 of the 2019 high school football season in northern Michigan features a number of great conference matchups.

Friday, Sept. 27 – 7 p.m.
Sanford Meridian (4-0, 3-0 Jack Pine Conference) at Clare (4-0, 3-0 Jack Pine Conference) – A meeting of two of the three remaining undefeated teams in the Jack Pine Conference, the winner of this puts itself in good contention for a league championship with three conference games remaining. The Mustangs have already matched their win total from last year and can secure its first five win or better season since 2015 with a victory. Clare leads the all-time series at 35-11.

Friday, Sept. 27 – 6:30 p.m.
Cedarville (2-2, 0-1 Great Lakes East) at Brimley (4-0, 2-0 Great Lakes East) – Brimley is enjoying its first 4-0 start since 1994 and can secure its first five-win season since 2011 with a win this week. Cedarville dropped a 66-58 shootout loss to defending 8-player Division 2 state champion Rapid River last week. The Trojans own the all-time series record at 46-19-2.

Friday, Sept. 27 – 7 p.m.
Manistee (3-1, 1-1 Lakes 8) at Division 4 No. 3 Muskegon Orchard View (4-0, 1-0 Lakes 8) – Manistee rebounded from a big loss to rival Ludington with a 67-12 win over Muskegon Heights last week while Orchard View, which is off to its best start since 2014, pulled off a 42-35 win over Belding. Orchard View has dominated this series, owning a 17-5 record all-time, but has lost two the last three in the series.

Friday, Sept. 27 – 7 p.m.
Mio (3-1) at Hillman (4-0) – The Tigers are 4-0 for the first time since 2014 and face a former North Star League foe in Mio that is in its first season of 8-player football. The Thunderbolts have outscored their last two opponents 130-18, but have dropped four straight in their season with Hillman and trail the all-time series at 33-26.

Saturday, Sept. 28 – 3 p.m.
Ogemaw Heights (3-1) at Sault Ste. Marie (3-1) – Ogemaw Heights is off to its best start since 2013 and has won two straight entering Saturday’s contest. Sault Ste. Marie outlasted Petoskey in overtime in a defensive battle last week. The Blue Devils have won the last three meetings and lead the all-time series at 3-1. Both schools will join the NMFL in 2020.

Friday, Sept. 27 – 7 p.m.
Houghton Lake (2-2, 2-1 Highland Conference) at Lake City (2-2, 2-1 Highland Conference) – Our MISportsNow Tailgate Game returns this week for the first meeting between these two since 2007. The Trojans rally in the final minute of last week’s game against rival McBain while the Bobcats cruised to a 46-6 victory over Roscommon for its second straight win. The Bobcats lead the all-time series at 15-8-1.
