Pellston, Gaylord St. Mary Gear Up for Historic Playoff Matchup

PELLSTON – Pellston continues its historic 2019 campaign this week with its first-ever playoff appearance.

The Hornets (8-1), who recorded their first winning season since 1995, welcome in Gaylord St. Mary (4-5) for an 8-player Division 1 pre-regional on Friday.

At 8-1, Pellston has recorded its first winning season since 1995.

Now in its fifth season of 8-player football, Pellston has posted just its eighth winning season since 1950 and only its second eight-win campaign.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s great for the community, it’s great for these kids,” Pellston coach Jack Carter said. “They’ve worked really, really hard.

“These guys have certain pizzazz to them. They get excited. We have four seniors that absolutely go out and work really, really hard. They bring it every single Friday night and I look forward to doing the same this Friday.”

The Snowbirds have reached the playoffs in their debut season in 8-player despite having to forfeit four wins due to the use of an ineligible player.

“It was tough with that news from the MHSAA with the forfeited games, so we were obviously super excited to get into playoffs,” St. Mary senior Brady Hunter said. “We really didn’t care who it was or where we were playing, we just wanted to make it so that was really exciting.”

Friday’s meeting is the first win the Pellston-St. Mary series since 2014.

St. Mary leads the all-time series at 30-7-2 and won the last meeting 45-0 in 2014.

The winner of Friday’s game will face either Suttons Bay (9-0) or Brimley (5-4) in a regional final.

Friday’s kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
