Beal City Tops Ubly, Punches Ticket to Ford Field

MT. PLEASANT – A Trey Small touchdown and a late interception gave Beal City a 21-20 win over Ubly in a Division 8 state semifinal at Mt. Pleasant Community Memorial Stadium on Saturday, sending the Aggies to their first state championship game since 2013.

With the Aggies trailing 8-0 after the opening quarter, Beal City and Ubly went to the half tied at 14-14.

With the game still tied at 14-14, Small put Beal City ahead by seven on a 7-yard run with 8:13 remaining in the fourth.

Ubly (10-3) got within a point on a touchdown with 52 seconds remaining in regulation but was turned away on the two-point conversion. The Bearcats would recover an onside kick attempt before throwing an interception with 30 seconds left in the contest.

Beal City (12-1) will face defending state champion Reading (12-1) in the state championship next Friday at 10 a.m. Reading cruised past Fowler 62-18 in Saturday’s other semifinal.
