Glen Lake Punches State Finals Ticket with Thrilling OT Victory
CLARE – Glen Lake rallied from a 14-point deficit with eight minutes remaining in regulation and pulled off a thrilling 31-30 overtime victory over Montague in a Division 6 state semifinal at Clare on Saturday, punching its ticket to the state finals and Ford Field for the first time since 2016.
After holding a 7-0 lead after the opening quarter on a Reece Hazelton run play, the Lakers (12-1) trailed 14-10 at the half and 21-10 through three quarters.
Montague (10-3) added to its lead on a field goal with 7:52 remaining in the contest.
The Lakers began their comeback on the ensuing drive, with Jacob Pleva bringing Glen Lake with seven on a 10-yard run.
After a defensive stop, Glen Lake marched down the field, converting three fourth downs, including on fourth-and-goal as time expired as Hazelton found Finn Hogan in the end zone. Brady McDonough then knocked through the extra point to send the game into overtime.
After Montague scored on its second play in overtime and missed the extra point, Glen Lake once again found itself facing a fourth down from the 5-yard line. Hazelton would connect with Brett Peterson, and McDonough knocked through the game-winning extra point.
Glen Lake will face Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (11-1) for the Division 6 state championship next Friday at 4:30 p.m. St. Mary topped Onsted 17-14 in Saturday’s other semifinal.
