No. 5 Leland Falls to No. 1 Mendon in Division 4 Title Match
BATTLE CREEK – For the second consecutive year, Leland saw its season come to an end in the MHSAA Division 4 volleyball state title match at the hands of Mendon.
Squaring off against the top-ranked Hornets Saturday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, the fifth-ranked Comets fell in four sets, losing by scores of 17-25, 19-25, 29-27, 14-25.
Leland was appearing in its fourth state final in the last six seasons, winning the 2015 Class D state championship.
“I thought that our offense became predictable, and which allowed them to sort of camp out on us, and block, because they knew what we were doing,” Leland coach Laurie Glass said. “For next year, I have everybody back, and some youngsters that are pretty good. So, Leland volleyball looks good.”
Tatum Karcek paced a balanced Leland offense with 15 kills and 16 digs while Gillian Grobbel tallied 13 kills. Olivia Lowe recorded 11 kills and Jana Molby added 37 assists.
Anna Smith led the way for Mendon (40-9-6) with a match-high 22 kills while Taylor Heitkamp had 12 kills.
The Comets, who wrap up their 2019 campaign at 44-14-3, are set to graduate a lone senior in Grobbel.
