Road to Ford Field: Glen Lake Preps for the Indoors, Division 6 Finals

MAPLE CITY – On the heels of consecutive thrilling one-point wins, the Glen Lake football program makes its return to Ford Field and the MHSAA Division 6 state finals this Thanksgiving weekend.

After back-to-back thrilling one-point wins, Glen Lake makes its return to Ford Field.

Glen Lake followed up its 15-14 win over Calumet in a regional final with an impressive 14-point rally, capped off with 31-30 overtime victory against 2018 Division 6 runner-up Montague in last Saturday’s semifinal.

The Lakers (12-1) now turn their attention to Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (11-1) and the Division 6 final to be played Friday afternoon.

Glen Lake is making its fourth trip to the state finals in search of its second state championship and first since winning the 1994 Class DD title.

After 13 weeks of playing in the elements, Glen Lake coach Jerry Angers has the Lakers preparing for the indoor environment and atmosphere of Ford Field at Saginaw Valley State’s indoor football practice facility – an idea sparked from a conversation Angers’ son Duke had with a one-time rival turned teammate at SVSU.

Friday’s meeting with Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central is the first for Glen Lake.

“Indoors, of course, we know that the weather’s different. But the air quality is so different,” Jerry Angers said. “It’s kind of funny because Duke found this out from Bo Bell, who we lost to in the state finals. And Bo, he told Duke, ‘We practiced indoors five times and that’s why we were used to the air when we were there.’ We struggled with it, so we’re going to get two days in.”

As for Friday’s opponent, St. Mary is making its first appearance in a state final since winning the 2014 Division 6 state championship and dethroning state powerhouse Ithaca.

St. Mary’s lone loss was 28-21 defeat against Division 4 regional finalist Milan in Week 3.

Friday’s state final from Ford Field kicks off at 4:30 p.m.
