Suttons Bay Welcomes in Kingston for State Semifinal

SUTTONS BAY – Suttons Bay finds itself one win away from reaching a state final for the first time since 2004.

Suttons Bay will face a Kingston team that is making its first semifinal appearance since 1996.

The Norsemen (11-0) host Kingston (9-2) in an 8-player Division 1 state semifinal Saturday afternoon, with the winner securing a spot in week’s final at Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome.

Suttons Bay is making its first semifinal appearance since reaching the 2006 Division 6 semifinals after posting playoff wins over Brimley (36-14) and Gaylord St. Mary (36-30).

“I continue to tell them, we had a goal at the beginning of the season and that was to win 13 games and end up at the Dome,” Suttons Bay coach Garrick Opie said. “I think they all have that vision and I think they’re excited to try to make it happen and realize their dream.”

Kingston is in a semifinal for the third time in program history and first since reaching the 1996 Class DD semifinals. The Cardinals won a wild 50-48 regional final over Mio last Friday. Kingston’s two losses came against traditional 8-player powers Morrice and Deckerville.

The winner of Saturday’s game will face either Morrice (10-1) or Colon (11-0) in the state semifinal next Saturday morning.

Saturday’s semifinal kicks off at 1 p.m.
