Top 5 Area Games: Second Round of Playoffs

The 2019 high school football playoffs continue this week of 11-player district and 8-player regional finals.
Below are a handful of intriguing area matchups for this week.

8-player Division 1
Regional Final
Friday, Nov. 8 – 7 p.m.
Gaylord St. Mary (5-5) at Suttons Bay (10-0) – A rematch from a Week 6 meeting that saw St. Mary win 48-47 prior to the Snowbirds forfeiting five games due to the use of an ineligible player. St. Mary ended Pellston’s historic season with a 48-6 win last Friday while Suttons Bay posted a 36-14 victory over Brimley. The Norsemen lead the all-time series at 4-1.

Division 8
District Final
Friday, Nov. 8 – 7 p.m.
Beal City (9-1) at Johannesburg-Lewiston (10-0) – A fun matchup featuring a pair of strong Division 8 programs. The Aggies are seeking their first district championship since 2014, which coincidentally came against the Cardinals, while Johannesburg-Lewiston looks for its first title since 2012. Beal City leads the all-time series at 3-0, with all three meetings coming in the postseason.

Division 7
District Final
Friday, Nov. 8 – 7 p.m.
Beaverton (10-0) at New Lothrop (10-0) – The Beavers look to continue their historic season by winning their first district championship this week. Beaverton will face a state power in New Lothrop that hasn’t missed the postseason since 2000 and is defending Division 7 state champion. The Beavers posted a 26-6 win over Byron last week while the Hornets toppled Laingsburg 47-3. This marks the first meeting between the two.

Division 5
District Final
Saturday, Nov. 9 – 1 p.m.
Muskegon Oakridge (10-0) at Kingsley (10-0) – A meeting of the top two ranked teams in Division 5, Kingsley is seeking its second straight district title while Oakridge is eyeing its first since 2017. The Stags are averaging more than 45 points per game and have allowed more than 20 points in a game just twice while the Eagles are allowing just over 10 points per contest. These two have never met.

8-player Division 2
Regional Final
Saturday, Nov. 9 – 3:30 p.m.
Pickford (9-1) at Powers North Central (10-0) – A rematch from a Week 3 meeting that saw North Central come out on top 20-14. Both teams have offensives that have been scoring at will, with Pickford averaging 52.6 points per contest while North Central is averaging 48.2. Pickford’s last win in the series came back in 2011. North Central leads the all-time series at 6-5.

District Final
Saturday, Nov. 9 – 2 p.m.
Cadillac (6-4) at Sault Ste. Marie (7-3) – A showdown of former Big North Conference foes, both of these teams pulled off upsets a week ago, with Cadillac handing Escanaba a 35-12 loss while Sault Ste. Marie avenged a Week 8 loss to Ludington with a big 46-6 victory. The Blue Devils are eyeing their first-ever district championship while the Vikings are seeking their first since 2013. Sault Ste. Marie leads the all-time series at 4-2.
