Traverse City West Falls To Troy Athens In Div. 1 Soccer State Final
COMSTOCK PARK – Traverse City West boys soccer team came into Saturday hoping for their first title since 2006.
To get to the finals, the Titans took down top-ranked Okemos and came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Novi in double overtime.
There was a bit of the same of that in Satuday’s matchup against second-ranked Troy Athens. Neither team scored in the first half.
The Redhawks scored on a free kick, while Colin Blackport tied the game with a penalty in the second half and the two headed to overtime.
Troy Athens would score three goals in that time and win it 4-1 in OT.
“We’ve talked from the very beginning about how we wanted to see how far this journey could take us,” said head coach MAtt Griesinger after the game. “All credit to Troy Athens that’s a great side and they are well deserving but super proud of the boys who just stuck in there and demonstrated that there’s good soccer that happens up north too.
The Titans finish the year 18-5-2.
