CMU Falls to Miami (Ohio) in MAC Title Game
DETROIT – Quinten Dormady threw for 232 yards and touchdown as Central Michigan fell to Miami (Ohio), 26-21 in the 2019 Mid-American Conference championship game at Ford Field in Detroit Saturday afternoon.
Making its first MAC championship game appearance since winning the 2009 MAC title, the Chippewas (8-5) fell behind 7-0 after the first quarter but went ahead 14-10 at the half behind a 21-yard rushing score from backup quarterback Tommy Lazzaro and an 11-yard reception by Tyrone Scott with 30 seconds remaining in the half.
The RedHawks (8-5) went back ahead for good early in the third quarter on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Brett Gabbert to Jack Sorenson, as Miami led 17-14 entering the fourth.
Sam Sloman would put the game on ice with three of his four field goals coming in the fourth quarter, including a 42 yarder with 28 left in regulation for the game’s final score.
“I’ve never been more proud of a group that I’ve been associated with in my coaching career,” CMU head coach Jim McElwain said following Saturday’s loss.
The Chippewas have gone from 1-11 a year ago and winless in the MAC to an eight-win campaign and a MAC West Division title in McElwain’s first season.
“Proud of my guys in that locker room. No matter the result, I love them to death,” CMU senior linebacker Michael Oliver said. “We fought, we fought like this every day all season. I’m proud. I’m a proud Chip right now.”
Lazzaro led CMU’s ground game on Saturday with 48 yards and two scores while senior Jonathan Ward had 10 carries for 26 yards.
JaCorey Sullivan had seven catches for 64 yards while Kalil Pimpleton had 52 yards on six receptions.
Miami’s Sorenson led all receivers with 123 yards and a score on eight catches while Jaylon Bester rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
CMU will now await to hear its bowl destination Sunday afternoon.
