Gaylord Looks to Make History this Winter
GAYLORD – The second-ranked Gaylord wrestling team has become a force to be reckoned within Division 2 throughout the state of Michigan.
And they’re back for the 2019-2020 season.
“Feels really good, team’s really solid this year,” said senior Jacob McKnight. “We’ve got a good group of guys in there everyone’s working real hard and ready to show what we got this year.”
The Blue Devils have set a standard, making it to the state quarterfinals four times over the last five years, which includes a state semifinal appearance last year.
“I think this year will definitely be our year if we have any shot at it. This is the one,” said senior Chayse LaJoie. “Our team is really good kids. Our seniors, we’re all together and at our highest point, some of us are going to the collegiate level. I know Jake McKnight is, I know I am and hopefully John Sosa and others, so we got a lot of good kids on our roster and I think that’s why.”
They only graduated three starters from last year and are bringing in new talent, with two freshman expected to start. Their goals remain the same: make another deep run in the state tournament and chase their first state title.
“We’ve got a few new guys into the program, so we have two freshman that are expected to start right away,” said Jerry LaJoie, the Blue Devils’ head coach. “And that’s the whole point, to get them to practice like our other teams have been and to get them to train the way our state tournament teams have been and so as many new kids come in, we have the same expectations and they meet the expectations.”
