MHSAA Announces Changes to 8-Player Playoff Selection Format
EAST LANSING – The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced on Monday that its representative council has adopted a strength-of-schedule formula to determine its 8-player football qualifiers.
Beginning with the 2020 season, the new 8-player selection format will place greater value on the success of a team’s opponents and establishes playoff divisions during the school classification process in March. The new format is similar to the 11-player playoff selection process that will take effect in 2020. The one difference being that points awarded for defeating an opponent will be the same in both divisions; the new 11-player format awards more points on an escalating scale for wins against schools in larger divisions.
The council also approved during its December 6 meeting the permanent use of non-traditional draws for basketball and volleyball. The measure aims to reduce long travel by not requiring a lone a school to host an entire district or regional tournament.
