MISportsNow’s Top Stories of 2019: No. 2 – Pit Spitters Win Northwoods League Title
As we approach a new year and a new decade, MISportsNow is looking back at the top 10 area sports stories for 2019. This is the ninth in a 10-part series.
A historic inaugural and record-setting season for the Traverse City Pit Spitters came full circle Friday, Aug. 16, 2019 in the Northwoods League Summer Collegiate World Series.
Facing the Eau Claire Express in the one-game, winner-take-all contest, the Pit Spitters scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to rally for a 3-2 victory.
“I had a feeling the whole game one of the phrases we’ve thrown around in our dugout and locker room is winners always find a way if you are a true winner and that’s your mindset. You’ll always find a way,” Pit Spitters manager Josh Rebandt said after the game. “These guys bought into it and never felt like they were out of the fight and tonight was icing on the cake for that. It’s been an unbelievable summer. I’m so grateful. I feel so blessed. These guys have been absolutely incredible and the emotions are through the roof.”
Traverse City rewrote the Northwoods League record book this season, eclipsing a 12-year-old record with 18 consecutive wins and tying the league’s regular season win mark with 52.
The Pit Spitters wrapped up their season at 56-20.
