Local Wrestlers Prepare for Girls Wrestling Finals

BOYNE CITY – The Michigan Wrestling Association will host its second annual Girls Wrestling Finals on Sunday at Adrian College. Last season, northern Michigan had 22 wrestlers place including Onaway’s Brittney Wolgast bringing home the title.

This year, there will be 22 teams from northern Michigan competing with 41 local student-athletes. Of those 41 competitors, four placed in last year’s tournament: Boyne City’s Elizabeth “Bizzy” Turnbull and Lydia Krauss, Central Montcalm’s Kaitlyn Hansen and Frankfort’s Briellen Clapp.

“They go the entire season wrestling with the boys team, and they do great,” Boyne City coach Bob South said. “But, this is an opportunity for them to wrestle like competition, and our girls are very ready for that challenge.”

Krauss placed the highest among them with a 2nd place finish and she will wrestle in the 145-pound weight class this year.

“This weekend I think we’re shooting more for the higher end of the podium,” Turnbull said. “I’ve definitely learned from my mistakes of last season, and I have a whole ‘nother season under my belt. So, I’m just coming in with more experience, more confidence. Ready to take on whatever is thrown at me.”

“My teammates have really pushed me, and they have really made me a better wrestler,” Krauss said. “They are very kind to me, and it makes a big difference.”

The top eight wrestlers earn a medal in each weight class. The grand march is at 9 a.m. on Sunday with competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. Matches last all day until the championship competitions around 3:30 p.m. Medal presentations will follow.
