Pine River Set to Host Fallen Bucks Memorial Tournament
LEROY – The Pine River wrestling program is honoring the memory of its former wrestlers with its Fallen Bucks Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
The eight-team tournament will feature dual matches and a tribute service honoring six former Pine River student-athletes who wrestled for the Bucks between 1988-2019, including Pine River senior and three-time all-stater Tim Rizor who tragically passed away in November 2019.
“It’s just a tragedy when young men go away from us too early, especially in those teens and early years before they’ve adjusted to life, and it’s just sad to see young people go before old people. That’s not the way it’s supposed to be,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “We have six boys that have died in their early teens or their late teens and early twenties. And so we’re just going to have a short little service after our first three duals. A lot of times, those names get lost, and we just want to make sure that they all stay around.”
The tournament features Marquette, Hart, Zeeland East, Gladwin, Traverse City West, Ogemaw Heights, Mason County Central and the host Bucks.
Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, with a tribute service starting at noon.
