2020 Wrestling Team State Finals Prep: Fremont

This is the fifth in a series of six stories previewing the 2020 MHSAA team wrestling state finals.

FREMONT – With its first regional championship in hand, the Fremont wrestling program is set to make its MHSAA team quarterfinals debut this week.

As the six-seed, Fremont (24-4) will face three-seed Alma (24-2) in a Division 3 quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center.

Fremont is in the quarterfinals after postseason wins over Tri County (39-37), Grant (45-20), Muskegon Orchard View (60-15) and Comstock Park (46-21).

“We saw them (Alma) for the first time this past Saturday at individual regionals,” Fremont coach Craig Zeerip said. “They’ve got some really good individuals. I’d say they’re really strong through the middle while we’re kinda strong on the lower end and on the upper end. That’s why I said it’s going to be on the team effort. We’re going to have to have kids compete whether they win or lose. I think points are big and they’re going to have to wrestle hard for six minutes.”

Alma is making its third consecutive Division 3 quarterfinal appearance following wins over Central Montcalm (75-6), Chesaning (48-19), Durand (59-21) and Lake Odessa Lakewood (47-21).

In addition to the team state finals, the Packers are sending four wrestlers to the individual state finals that will take place March 6-7 at Detroit’s Ford Field.

Friday’s quarterfinal is set for 4:30 p.m. The winner will face either second-seed Richmond (24-5) or seven-seed Kingsley (25-3) in a semifinal Saturday at noon.
