2020 Wrestling Team State Finals Prep: Gaylord

This is the fourth in a series of six stories previewing the 2020 MHSAA team wrestling state finals.

GAYLORD – The Gaylord wrestling program is set to make its fifth state quarterfinal appearance in six years on Friday.

As the second-seed, the Blue Devils (30-0) will take on seven-seed New Boston Huron (21-4) in a Division 2 quarterfinal at 6:45 p.m. Friday at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center.

After reaching the state title match for the first time in school history in 2018, Gaylord is motivated to get back and eyeing a potential rematch with state powerhouse Lowell.

“Falling short my sophomore year, and then falling short again my junior year, that was rough, Gaylord senior Aurelius Krumholz said. “Come home to congratulations still, but it’s going to be nice to have another opportunity to bring that big trophy home.”

“It’d be a really good gift for Coach LaJoie, too,” added Gaylord senior John Sosa. “He just got his 700th win at the beginning of the season. The gratitude of all our hard work paying off. That’s what it’s going to take. It’s going to take everybody to wrestle.”

The Blue Devils are back in the quarterfinals after postseason wins over Petoskey (78-0), Escanaba (42-28) and DeWitt (33-30).

New Boston Huron won Class B state championships in 1978 and 1981 and picked up 2020 postseason wins over Romulus (68-9), Southgate Anderson (45-27), Tecumseh (66-12) and Gibraltar Carlson (38-37).

In addition to the team state finals, the Blue Devils are sending seven wrestlers to the individual state finals that will take place March 6-7 at Detroit’s Ford Field.

Friday’s quarterfinal is set for 6:45 p.m.  The winner will face either the third-seed Stevensville Lakeshore (19-1) or six-seed Mason (23-2) in a semifinal Saturday at noon.
