Chippewa Hills Wins 9th Straight Regional Championship

SHEPHERD – The Chippewa Hills wrestling program captured its ninth straight Division 3 regional championship with a 37-31 win over Shepherd on Wednesday, securing its spot in a state quarterfinal at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center next week.

“That is absolutely the battle that we were expecting to have. Shepherd is a very solid team,” Chippewa Hills coach Kevin Edwards said. “Matchups were unbelievable. It made for a great duel. Honestly, whether it was a win or a loss, every match was a big match. It was awesome.”

Earlier in the evening Chippewa Hills recorded a 49-27 win over Gladwin in a semifinal while host Shepherd, which was seeking its second consecutive regional title, downed Freeland 67-12.

Chippewa Hills now awaits to hear its quarterfinal opponent. Next week’s state quarterfinal pairings will be announced on Sunday.
