D4 No. 2 Bellaire Holds off Gaylord St. Mary, Moves to 12-0 in Ski Valley Play

GAYLORD – Division 4 second-ranked Bellaire ran its record to 15-0 with a 37-31 win over Gaylord St. Mary on Tuesday, sweeping the regular-season series in the process.

Bellaire clung to a 32-31 lead with 19 seconds remaining in regulation in the Ski Valley Conference tilt.

The Eagles (15-0, 12-0) led 12-4 after the opening quarter and extended their lead to 24-13 at the half.

“With two high-quality energy teams like that, it was the slimmest of margins,” Bellaire Brad Fischer said. “We battled hard on the boards. I think that was something at times. We may not have gotten the rebound, but we were able to deflect it so that we could still establish and set up our defense. And maybe switching the tempo a little bit, and going to our zone, I think helped us at times, too.”

Libby Derrer led Bellaire with 15 points while Megan Grusczynski paced St. Mary with nine.

St. Mary (12-4, 11-2) travels to Inland Lakes on Thursday while Bellaire visits Johannesburg-Lewiston.
