First Female Veteran Official Starter Waves Green Flag at I-500
SAULT STE MARIE – A touching tradition continued on Saturday at the I-500 Snowmobile Race.
Every year a disabled veteran gets to wave the green flag to officially start the longest snowmobile race in the country. This year Lesley Meeker-Jago was the starter, making her the first female to ever have the honor.
“To be able to be out here and represent females and female veterans it’s an absolute honor and a privilege,” said Meeker-Jago, a National Guard veteran. “It’s nice to be able to show out for our lady veterans and it’s just absolutely amazing and very heartfelt and it has really touched me.”
She was honored during the pre-race ceremonies and received her own flag with all the riders autographs.
The I-500 is being streamed on our website and the SBTV app.
