Gaylord Falls to Reigning Champ Lowell in State Final
KALAMAZOO — Gaylord advanced to its second state final in program history on Saturday with a 45-23 victory over Stevensville Lakeshore, but the Blue Devils could not take down the reigning champs, losing to Lowell, 53-4, in the state championship.
John Sosa picked up four points for Gaylord in his 130-pound match, moving the Blue Devils within four. But that was as close as they got. The Red Arrows rattled off 45 straight points on their way to their seventh straight state title.
This is the third straight year that Gaylord had its postseason end against Lowell. They lost by 10 points last season in the state semis and lost 43-17 in the 2018 state finals.
Gaylord finishes the season with a 32-1 record. They qualified seven wrestlers in next week’s individual finals, including five seniors: Sosa, Will Sides, Rico Brown, Chayse LaJoie and Jacob McKnight. Freshman Brendan Smith and sophomore Gabe Thompson also qualified.
