Marquette Sweeps Division 1 State Finals

HARBOR SPRINGS – The Marquette boys and girls ski programs captured the MHSAA Division 1 state championships at Boyne Highlands on Monday.

The Redmen boys won their eighth straight state title with 81 points, edging Brighton with 82 points. Rochester Adams was third (92), Traverse City West (93) and Grand Haven-Black River rounded out the top five with 184 points.

On the girls side, the Redettes won their fifth straight championship with 67 points. Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern-Eastern was second (77), Traverse City Central third (82), Clarkston fourth (114) and Birmingham fifth (211).

In the morning session, Marquette’s Aaron Grezlak won the slalom with a combined run of 1:19.23. Traverse City West’s Aiden Lewandowski was second (1:21.12) and teammate Luke Wiersema came home in seventh place (1:26.95).

On the girls side of the morning session, Marquette’s Jacey Johnson won the slalom state championship with a combined run of 1:26.03. Traverse City Central’s Elizabeth Saunders was second (1:27.12) and teammate Elle Craven was seventh (1:29.78).

In the afternoon boys session, Grezlak completed the sweep with a win in the giant slalom with a combined run of 59.53. Lewandowski was fifth (1:00.26) and Traverse City Central’s Gus Dutmers came home in 10th (1:01.29).

On the girls side, Marquette’s Ainsley Kirk won the giant slalom with a time of 1:01.70. Craven finished in sixth place (1:03.20) and Traverse City West’s Ava Warren was eighth (1:03.38).
