Ferris State Men, Women Both Earn NCAA D2 Tournament Bids
BIG RAPIDS – The Bulldogs of Ferris State found out on Sunday evening if they would be NCAA D2 Tournament bound or not.
Both teams earned bids, making it the first time in school history both teams will be heading to the tournament.
“We hope that it becomes the norm,” said men’s head basketball coach, Andy Bronkema. “They’ve made it on years we haven’t and we’ve made it when they didn’t, so now we’re making it together and it’s a lot of fun. I mean to have that joint party at the selection show was awesome and I’m looking at their team not just as a coach, but as a fan.”
“Just seeing the young players they have, there’s no reason they can’t string a bunch together they’ve got a great program with a lot of talent coming up through the ranks so it’s pretty exciting to do it,” added Bronkema of the women’s team. “We all work for Ferris State, whether it’s in our season or other sports, we’re proud when big things happen.”
The women’s team earned #5 in the Midwest Region and will play GVSU on Friday in Springfield, MO. This is their first tournament bid since 2012.
“It’s been a really great journey,” said women’s head coach Kendra Faustin. “There’s been a lot of times we’ve been on the bus a little disappointed while the men are celebrating for the first couple years, and this year there was a lot of winning on both sides of the aisle on the bus. There’s been a lot of celebration.”
The men’s team earned #7 in the Midwest Region and will play Truman State on Saturday in Indianapolis, IN.
