Ferris State Women Fall in Final Seconds to Wayne State in GLIAC Quarters

BIG RAPIDS – Despite a game-high 27 points from Riley Blair, the Ferris State women’s basketball team dropped a 78-76 decision to Wayne State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal Tuesday at Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs (21-8) led 23-19 after the opening quarter but trailed 38-36 and 56-55 after three.

With the game tied at 76-76 with three seconds remaining in regulation, Wayne State’s Sam Cherney put the Warriors ahead on a layup, giving Wayne State its first lead since the start of the quarter.

Adrienne Anderson and Mallory McCartney joined Blair in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Nastassja Chambers paced the Warriors with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Tuesday’s loss snapped a six-game win streak for Ferris State and marked the team’s second loss in three games against Wayne State this season. The GLIAC North champions, Ferris State has recorded its first 20-win season since 2011-12.

Ferris State will now await to hear if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Bulldogs are ranked sixth in the most recent Midwest Region rankings. The top eight teams in each region receive tournament bids. The tournament bracket is released on Sunday.
