PELLSTON – Pellston senior student-athlete Blake Cassidy celebrated his commitment to Lake Superior State and its men’s basketball program on Wednesday.

Cassidy concluded his high school career ranked second in program history with 1,695 points. He also ranks in the top 20 in MHSAA history for career 3-pointers made with 227.

“I can’t be more excited for the future to be a Laker,” Cassidy said. “The last visit, I went up there, watched a game, talked with coach, and he pretty much just said it in front of me. ‘We want you. We want you to be a part of this family.’ And I felt the same way. I’ve always wanted to be up there. It was almost like a puzzle being solved.”

While Cassidy’s thankful for the opportunity to continue his basketball career at the collegiate level, he wanted one more shot to win another district title with his Hornet teammates.

“I’m more upset that my friends and other guys on the team aren’t going to be able to play another basketball game, but you know, it’s nice to know that I’m going to be able to play in the future for the next 4-5 years,” he said. “I’m still bummed that I’m never going to be able to put on a Pellston jersey ever again.”

Program records and conference and postseason titles aside, Cassidy will miss the camaraderie the most.

“There’s too many memories to choose from, but definitely just every year always having someone by my side,” Cassidy said. “I always could count on my guys. That’s the one thing, you know, the trophies and all the wins and everything, nobody will really remember that. But it’s the memories that I’ll never forget.”
