Campione Takes Over Reins at Morley Stanwood

Morley Stanwood’s varsity football program will be under the direction of a new head coach this fall.

Art Campione is taking over the reins from longtime coach and athletic director Clark Huntey who stepped down following the 2019 season. Huntey led the Mohawks to a 6-4 mark in 2019 and the Central State Activities Association Silver championship.

A former defensive coordinator, Campione takes over a Morley Stanwood program that has made six consecutive playoff appearances and nine in the last 11 years.

“For me to come in and say, ‘You know, we’re going to do something different, we’re going to throw it 50 times,’ it wouldn’t make any sense,” Campione said. “They’ve been a traditional power in their conference. They’re the team that’s picked to win it most of the time going in. The head coach, Clark, has done an unbelievable job. He’s sticking around. I’ve had a chance to talk with him quite a bit, pick his brain. You know, what are you thinking during a time like this? He’s been really honest with me. The principal is on staff. It’s been phenomenal.”

While on Central Montcalm’s sidelines last fall, Campione was part of a coaching staff that guided the Hornets to their first playoff appearance since 2014 and first winning campaign since 2011.

Campione’s first game as head coach will be against Central Montcalm in Week 1 on Thursday, Aug. 27.
