Traverse City native and former NBA star Dan Majerle has filed a lawsuit against Grand Canyon University.

According to multiple reports, Majerle, who was fired by GCU back on March 17 after serving seven seasons as the school’s head men’s basketball coach, alleges the university has not honored his employment agreement regarding salary and severance pay and has continued to use his likeness after his termination.

A graduate of Traverse City High School, Majerle went 136-89 in seven seasons at GCU, taking over the program in its first season as an NCAA Division I team in 2013 and leading the Antelopes to three CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament bids and two College Basketball Invitational berths.

A statement from the university reads:

“GCU was surprised to learn through members of the media that former coach Dan Majerle has apparently filed a lawsuit against the University. Rather than serving the University with a copy of his complaint, Coach Majerle appears instead to have provided copies of his complaint to members of the media. The University hired Coach Majerle when he had no prior head coaching experience and no college coaching experience with the greatest hope and belief that he would lead the men’s basketball program for 20-plus years. The University financially supported Coach Majerle and the men’s basketball program at the highest level during his seven-year tenure and wanted nothing but the best for him and the program. We regret that Coach Majerle’s tenure had to end the way it did, but the University is prepared to defend itself and its decision if necessary should Coach Majerle decide to continue with litigation. GCU is unable to comment further until such time as it receives a copy of Coach Majerle’s complaint and has an opportunity to review his allegations.”

A former three-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team member, Majerle starred at Central Michigan before winning a bronze medal with Team USA in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. His NBA career saw him play for the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat and spanned from 1988-2002.

A guard, Majerle finished his NBA career with 10,925 points, 4,265 rebounds and 2,755 assists. He previously held CMU’s single-season scoring record before Marcus Keene broke the record in 2016-17.
