Grayling has hired LJ Mead as its next varsity boys basketball coach.
Mead spent the previous two years as a fifth and sixth grade coach at Grayling and has a long coaching history at Grayling, including two stints (2004-07, 2013-16) as the school’s varsity girls basketball coach.
In addition to elementary level and varsity girls coaching positions at Grayling, Mead has coached middle schools boys (2003-04, 2017-18) and freshman boys (2007-10) and served three stints as a varsity boys assistant under former coach Rich Moffitt. He also coached Houghton Lake’s varsity boys program during the 2011-12 season.
“Rich Moffit was here for years. He was my mentor,” Mead said. “Future Hall of Fame coach here at Grayling and northern legend, actually. He had a lot of success. I had a lot of success with them. Hopefully we can start to bring it back to that level.”
Mead takes over a Grayling program that went 2-19 in 2019-20 and winless in the Lake Michigan Conference.
