Lundteigen Launches New NMU Alpine Ski Program

Petoskey boys ski coach Erik Lundteigen is embarking on a new and exciting opportunity that will see the veteran coach join the collegiate ranks.

13046894 GLundteigen was recently hired by Northern Michigan University to head up its new men’s and women’s Alpine ski programs.

NMU’s Alpine ski programs will compete as members of the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association and train at Marquette Mountain.

Under Lundteigen’s tutelage (2013-20), a Petoskey program that already had a long state championship tradition won six MHSAA Division 2 state titles and recorded a runner-up finish in 2019. The Northmen won eight consecutive titles from 2011-18, including five under Lundteigen, and capped off his tenure with a state championship in 2020.13046893 G

“It’s tough to leave that situation,” Lundteigen said. “We’ve won six of the last seven years. We’ve been champions. But the program will survive. I’m telling you what. There have been a lot of good coaches that have gone through the program. A lot of good athletes, parents. So it’s a good opportunity for me to head north and be part of something a little different.”

Lundteigen will have some familiar faces joining his NMU program, including Petoskey senior and 2020 Division 2 slalom state champion Jimmy Flom.
