Schwellenbach Gets Second Chance with Pit Spitters

University of Nebraska sophomore infielder and Saginaw Heritage alum Spencer Schwellenbach is getting a second change to play with the Traverse City Pit Spitters.

A 34th-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in 2018, Schwellenbach was scheduled to join the Pit Spitters last summer but missed out on the opportunity because of an injury.

Schwellenbach’s now getting another opportunity in Traverse City after the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League canceled its season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I was supposed to play in the Cape Cod, and that got canceled pretty quick. Then a spot opened up and coach asked me to play and I was like, ‘Heck yeah,’” Schwellenbach said. “The coaches seem great. They seem like they care about us a lot and all the guys seem to fit in pretty well with each other and I’m excited to get going.”

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic forcing the cancellation of his sophomore campaign, Schwellenbach was batting .295 and ranked second on Nebraska’s roster in hits and runs scored.
