Sault Ste. Marie Native Calder Named LSSU Alternate Captain
Lake Superior State junior forward Ashton Calder is set to become the first Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. native in more than a decade to serve as a captain for the Lakers.
Calder is the first Sault Ste. Marie native to serve as a captain since Steven Kaunisto during the 2009-10 season.
“I’d just say it’s an honor,” Calder said. “I mean obviously as a kid, I used to go to Laker games and stuff and just to watch. You remember all the captains from back in the day. I mean the last Sault captain was Steven Kaunisto. I just remember all of that. It’s pretty cool to be from here, to come here and to be a captain. It’s an honor.”
Calder will enter the 2020-21 season as LSSU’s leading active point leader with 50 points on 17 goals and 33 assists in 78 games. He appeared in all 41 games for the Lakers during the 2019-20 season, and was twice named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Forward of the Week. Calder tallied 12 goals and 28 points as a sophomore.
A finance and economics major, Calder played junior hockey for the Soo Eagles, Minnesota Wilderness, Surrey Eagles and Lincoln Stars before attending LSSU.
