Schwellenbach, Pit Spitters Top Resorters to Open 2020 Season

Spencer Schwellenbach drove in four runs as the Traverse City Pit Spitters opened their 2020 Northwoods League season with a 6-2 win over the Great Lakes Resorters in Michigan North Pod action at Turtle Creek Stadium Wednesday.

The Pit Spitters broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday on a two-run, two-out single from Schwellenbach and would tack on two more insurance runs in the seventh.

Mario Camilletti went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a walk to pace Traverse City.

The Pit Spitters chased Great Lakes starter Jordan Patty after just 1 1/2 innings. Patty allowed four runs (two earned) on one hit and two walks while striking out one.

Braxton Bragg earned the win in relief, taking over for starter and reigning Northwoods League Pitcher of the Year Andrew Hoffmann in the third. Bragg allowed just one walk over two innings while Hoffmann surrendered two earned runs on four hits and walk while striking out four.

The bullpen for the Pit Spitters held the Resorters in check after the second inning Wednesday, not allowing a hit past the second inning while striking out eight over the final seven innings.

Seth Halvorsen went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Resorters while Preston Viltz went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Cal Djuraskovic was saddled with the loss for Great Lakes after tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief.

The Resorters committed four errors in the contest.

Prior to Wednesday’s contest the Pit Spitters received their 2019 Northwoods League championship rings.

The Pit Spitters are back in action Thursday against the Northern Michigan Dune Bears. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
