GLADWIN — Jerry Smalley has established himself has one of the best soccer coaches in northern Michigan. After nearly 20 years of coaching the boys varsity soccer team at Gladwin High School, he made the decision to step down.

Smalley had been the only boys varsity coach since the program kicked off in 2002 and had been positively impacting the lives of his young players ever since.

“I really enjoyed it, the kids have been great. That’s been my main reason for coaching because I like working with kids and hope to make it an enjoyable experience,” said Smalley. “Over the 20 years I’ve been able to coach both my sons and then just lots of other great kids that have come through. My biggest goal has always been giving the kids a positive experience and hopefully I’ve done that.”

Smalley finished his two decade-long boys varsity career with 240 total wins, two districts, one regional and seven league titles.

“You coach for the memories and there are so many. I’ve enjoyed it and I’m gonna miss it because like I said there’s some great kids in our program and I’m gonna miss that,” said Smalley.

Smalley will continue to coach the girls soccer and girls basketball teams at Gladwin.
