Gaylord St. Mary Hungry for More in 2020

GAYLORD – After an eventful 2019 season, Gaylord St. Mary is set to embark on its second season of 8-player football.

The Snowbirds started the 2019 season as one of the best teams in the state before having to forfeit four wins because of an ineligible player.

St. Mary would go on to make playoffs, eventually falling to Suttons Bay in a Division 1 regional final to end the season at 5-6.

The end of last season has the Snowbirds motivated as they enter 2020.

“We all worked hard for that and it was upsetting to hear that we had to forfeit all of hard work,” St. Mary senior Christopher Koscielnik said. “This year we’re going to be more disciplined, more close to each other with chemistry so we don’t have to go through anything like that again.”

St. Mary is joining up with six other schools to reform the Ski Valley Conference this fall. The Snowbirds played as an independent last year. With the formation of the Northern Michigan Football League and with many of its schools moving to 8-player, the Ski Valley last sponsored football in 2015.

The Snowbirds also graduated a talented senior class that saw success on the gridiron, basketball court and baseball diamond.

“It’s a privilege to play, we’re really lucky with everything that’s going on,” St. Mary senior Conrad Korte said. “I know a lot of teams can’t play so I’m excited to be back out here with my friends. Our goal, I mean we’ll start with making playoffs, and hopefully we can make it as far as we did last year. It’ll be tough without that talented senior class that just graduated, but I think we can do it.”

St. Mary travels to Hale on Thursday, Aug. 27. It marks the first meeting between the two schools.
