Marion Eyes Playoff Win, League Title in 2020

MARION – After consecutive 6-4 campaigns, Marion is looking to contend for a conference title and playoff win in 2020.

Marion graduated a senior class of nine, which is a large class considering the size of the school.

Coach Chad Grundy took over Marion’s program midway through the 2019 season. The Eagles won their final four regular-season games to reach the playoffs after starting the year 2-3.

Marion has made the playoffs each of the last three seasons and won a West Michigan D League title in 2017.

A playoff win has proven elusive, though.

“These kids have worked really hard,” Grundy said. “We’re just hoping we can get that next step above and win some playoff games. We’ve gotten there three years in a row so they’ve got to take that next step.”

Marion’s last playoff win came back in 1996.

“That’d mean everything that’s kind of always been the goal,” Marion senior Riley Moggo said. “We’ve made it the last few years and just lost in the first round. We want to finally get past that and win our first one.”

Marion opens its season at Onekama on Thursday, Aug. 27. It marks the fourth straight year the two teams have met in Week 1.
