Area Football Teams Return to the Field
MAPLE CITY – The 2020 high school football season officially resumed Tuesday as teams across Michigan took to the practice field in preparation for next week’s opening games.
Schools will commence a six-game regular-season schedule Sept. 17-19, beginning with originally-scheduled Week 4 games. All 11 and 8-player teams will qualify for the postseason. Eight-player finals are set for the weekend of Nov. 27-28 and 11-player finals are scheduled for Dec. 4-5.
“There’s nothing like it, it’s football in the fall under Friday night lights,” Glen Lake senior Finn Hogan said. “I can remember, I was at work with one of my friends, he comes running over, ‘It’s on, it’s on.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean it’s on?’ And he said football they brought it back on. And we were all surprised.
“The energy is just incredible. We’re really grateful that we get to be out here today.”
Through all the changes and new protocols put in place because of the coronavirus pandemic, Glen Lake’s student-athletes have remained resilient and taken it all in stride.
“You got to do all the little things right, and this is another little thing that really is a big thing,” first-year Glen Lake coach Nate Sneed said. “It’s what we’re supposed to do and we’re going to be disciplined with it and we have good protocols in place and the kids respect them and follow them. We all know it could end real quickly.
“I’ll tell you what we’ve never been so happy to just call a team meeting.”
Glen Lake is set to open its season at home against Boyne City on Friday, Sept. 18.
