MHSAA Announces Changes for 2020 Football Playoffs
The MHSAA announced several changes to its 2020 11-player and 8-player football playoffs Friday.
For the 11-player postseason, the field will be comprised of 512 teams (there are currently 507 11-player teams, so five teams will receive first-round byes).
The 11-player tournament will be comprised of three district rounds, regional finals, state finals and state finals. Host sites for semifinals and finals will be pre-arranged and determined at a later date. State finals will be played Dec. 4-6.
The MHSAA has placed teams in pre-arranged districts that will be seed 1-8 based on playoff-point average. The teams with the highest averages will host at the district and regional levels.

For the 8-player postseason, 64 teams will receive playoff bids, with the top 32 teams in each division based on playoff-point average qualifying for the playoffs. There are currently 78 8-player programs in the state, so the remaining 14 teams that do not receive a playoff bid are permitted to schedule one additional game against other non-qualifier teams.
The 8-player tournament will be comprised of three regional rounds, state semifinals and state finals. The state final will be played Nov. 27-28 at a site(s) to be determined.
