Johannesburg-Lewiston’s Smokevitch Honored by Detroit Lions

080917 Joburg Fb Vsv.movJohannesburg-Lewiston’s Joe Smokevitch has been selected by the Detroit Lions as the Week 3 recipient of its 2020 Michigan High School Coach of the Week program.

The 10th-ranked team in Division 8, Johannesburg-Lewiston (3-0) is coming off a 37-6 win over Frankfort last week.

Smokevitch is in his 21st season coaching high school football and his eighth as head coach of the Cardinals. Smokevitch was a longtime assistant coach at Johannesburg-Lewiston and has led the Cardinals to six playoff berths and a 58-19 record. His Cardinals have won 22 games over the last two-plus seasons.

Now in its 24rd year, the Detroit Lions High School Coach of the Week program awards a $1,500 donation to the recipient’s football program. All winners receive a certificate signed by Lions coach Matt Patricia and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, as well as a personalized game ball and acknowledgement at an upcoming home game. The season’s Coach of the Year will be awarded a $3,000 donation to the school’s football team.
