Top 5 Area Games: Week 4

The 2020 high school football season rolls on this week with several great 8-player matchups, including a battle atop the Ski Valley Conference standings.

Friday, Oct. 9
Pellston (3-0, 3-0 Ski Valley) at 8-Player No. 8 Gaylord St. Mary (3-0, 3-0 Ski Valley), 7 p.m. – Our Sports Overtime Game of the Week, the winner here secures at least a share of the Ski Valley Conference championship. Neither team has faced much of a challenge through three weeks. The Hornets are building off a historic 2019 campaign that saw them go 8-2 and make the playoffs for the first time ever. St. Mary rolled to a 48-6 win last year and leads the all-time series at 31-7-2.

Friday, Oct. 9
Division 3 HM Mt. Pleasant (2-1) at Flint Powers (1-2), 7 p.m. – After falling by 21 points to Midland last week, Mt. Pleasant faces a tall task in this cross division matchup with Flint Powers. The Chargers reached the Division 4 state semifinals last year and picked up their first win of 2020 last week with a victory over Saginaw Arthur Hill. These two have split the first two meetings, with Mt. Pleasant winning 21-14 in 2013.

Friday, Oct. 9
Benzie Central (2-1, 2-1 NMFL Legends) at Sault Ste. Marie (2-1, 2-1 NMFL Legends), 7 p.m. – This marks the first meeting between the two since 2008. The Huskies have won two straight and face a difficult road ahead with games against Glen Lake and Kingsley on the horizon. Sault Ste. Marie is 2-0 all-time against Benzie Central.

Saturday, Oct. 10
Onaway (3-0) at Atlanta (2-1), 1 p.m. – Onaway is off to its best start since 2012 and its first 3-0 start at the 8-player level. Atlanta is 2-1 for the first time since 2017 and has already matched its win total from last year. The Cardinals have allowed only six points this fall and lead the all-time series at 6-4-2.

Saturday, Oct. 10
Whittemore-Prescott (2-1) at 8-Player No. 5 Suttons Bay (3-0), 2 p.m. – The Norsemen are 3-0 for the third straight fall and have rolled through their opening three games, outscoring opponents 134-8. The Cardinals are in their first year of 8-player football and are coming off a 54-18 loss to No. 8 Gaylord St. Mary. Whittemore-Prescott won the last meeting, 20-7, in 2011 and leads the all-time series at 3-2.
