Elk Rapids Prepares for State Semifinal Against G.R. South Christian

ELK RAPIDS — Elk Rapids has had an impressive postseason, outscoring opponents, 17-0, in their four playoff games, but the Elks will face their toughest test in the Div. 3 state semifinals on Wednesday.

Elk Rapids (19-2-4) will take Grand Rapids South Christian (17-0-1), who is no stranger to the state finals. The Sailors have made six appearances in the state championship since 2007, which includes a runner-up finish in 2019 and a title in 2015.

Meanwhile, Elk Rapids seeks its first state championship appearance since 1998 when they won their second straight title. The Elks have made five appearances in the state championship.

“As soon as we step off that bus, we gotta be in the right mindset that we can go in and win this game,” Elk Rapids boys soccer coach Nate Plum said. “We’ve got a lot of talent on this team, but if we don’t bring the effort to go with that talent then you know what it could be a hard day. You know, I think overall it really just comes down to our belief that we can do it at this point.”

“A big thing that coach always tells us is have fun. Just go out there and have fun. Don’t worry about what’s gonna happen, you know, it’s about the memories,” Elk Rapids senior Kadin Patterson said. “Winning the games is great, winning is fun, but the bottom line is go out have fun and be confident that’s how we’re play our best game.”

The game will start at 6 p.m. at Cedar Springs on Wednesday.
