GLIAC Approves Winter, Spring Sports Competition Calendars

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Council of Presidents and Chancellors has approved 2021 winter and spring sports competition calendars.

Fall sports that will be competing during the spring 2021 season will feature a reduced conference-only schedule and a conference postseason tournament.

The 2021 men’s and women’s basketball seasons will play a conference-only schedule that begins on Thursday, Jan. 7. Swimming and diving and indoor track and field can continue to compete according to normal NCAA guidelines.

“Our administrators, coaches and the task force have been meeting weekly with the hope of getting our student-athletes back on the court or field next semester,” said GLIAC Commissioner Kris Dunbar in a statement. “Their commitment to this process is impressive, and the safety of the student-athletes, staff and our communities have been at the forefront of our decisions. I can’t understate how proud I am of how far we’ve come and what we’ve weathered.”

The volleyball season is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 19, with men’s and women’s soccer seasons beginning on Friday, March 19. The fall 2020 women’s tennis season will be played alongside the spring men’s season while the fall 2020 cross country season has been canceled. Football programs are permitted to schedule up to five spring contests. All spring sports schedules will continue as-is.

The GLIAC will release men’s and women’s basketball schedules at 1 p.m. Thursday and men’s and women’s soccer schedules on Monday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. A volleyball schedule release date has not yet been finalized.
