LSSU Drops Puck on 2020-21 Season

SAULT STE. MARIE – The puck drops on Lake Superior State’s 55th hockey season on Saturday as the Lakers open their 2020-21 campaign at Taffy Abel Arena against Michigan Tech.

LSSU will play seven non-conference games against Western Collegiate Hockey Association foes and a 16-game league schedule.

The Lakers return 60% of their goal scoring from last season and 74% of their total points along with seven seniors. Three of those seven seniors will be wearing letters this winter as will Sault Ste. Marie native and junior Ashton Calder.

LSSU got off to a slow start in 2019-20, dropping six of its first eight games that included matchups against a trio of perennial powers.

With 18 players returning from last year’s squad, the Lakers are primed to improve on last year’s 14-23-4 mark.

“You know, we got off to a bad start,” LSSU coach Damon Whitten said of the team’s start last season. “Our seniors, our returners are all aware of that. So getting off to better start is important. We have a pretty tough schedule. We had No. 1 Denver and then we went to Michigan, to Notre Dame. That’s a challenging schedule for sure. Our seniors have talked about, they have unfinished business.”

Saturday’s game is slated for a 5:07 p.m. The two teams meet again at 3:07 p.m. Sunday.
