Traverse City West Prepares for Rematch With Troy Athens
TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City West boys soccer team is once again in the state semifinals this year, and the Titans have a familiar opponent on Wednesday. They will face Troy Athens, the same team that defeated T.C. West in last year’s state championship.
The Titans will now have to defeat the Red Hawks if they want a shot at their first state title since 2006.
“We’re a different team. Athens is a different team, so yeah, it’s fun to look at on paper and talk about how it’s a rematch of the state finals last year, but vastly different teams, vastly different circumstances,” T.C. West boys soccer coach Matt Griesinger said. “So we’re excited, but it’s any other playoff game; it’s not a particular team.”
T.C. West has had an impressive season, currently holding a 21-1-2 record, while Troy Athens is 14-2-3. The Red Hawks has made a state finals appearance in two of the last four years, and they have five state titles as a program.
“This season has been going pretty well for us,” T.C. West senior Kaden Aeles said. “I think the quality of play right now is better than it ever has been and the boys are pretty focused right now, so I think we’re looking pretty good here.”
The game will start at 6 p.m. at Holt High School.
