ST. IGNACE – High school winter sports will hopefully return in mid-January.

One team who we see very often make it to the final weeks of the season is St. Ignace girls basketball.

The Saints were one of the teams this past year that were still in the running for a state championship in March when COVID-19 hit and took away their season.

As they return for this year, they have some changes coming. There will be new protocols in place for COVID-19 precautions, plus they’re replacing three key players and moving up a division.

“Division 3 is a different beast and we’re just going to see what happens each week as it comes and see where we end up,” said head coach Dorene Ingalls. “Those three seniors were very very important so losing them and that experience is something we’re trying to fill and we’ve got some kids ready and rearing to go if we can get going so they’re pretty excited to step up and show their stuff too.”

As of now, the Saints can begin practice on January 16, like the rest of winter sports. They can begin competition on January 22.
