Cadillac, St. Francis Embark on Trip to Ford Field

Community members and fans hosted send-off events for the Traverse City St. Francis and Cadillac football programs Friday morning as the two teams make the journey to Detroit and Ford Field for the MHSAA football state finals.

The Vikings (8-2) will make their first-ever appearance in a MHSAA state championship game when they take on Detroit Country Day (8-2) in the Division 4 final Friday evening at Ford Field in Detroit.

On the heels of winning its first district championship since 2013 last year, Cadillac captured its first regional title in program history with a 27-23 come-from-behind win over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern two weeks ago and pulled off a stunning 28-26 victory over 2018 Division 4 state champion in last week’s state semifinal.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Cadillac coach Cody Mallory said. “I’m happy for our kids that they get to experience this. It’s something it’s once in a lifetime kind of stuff. We’ll have to play some good ball but I think our guys are up to the task.”

Traverse City St. Francis is returning to the state finals this week for a 10th time in program history and first since 2009.

The Gladiators (9-2) will face New Lothrop (10-0) in a meeting of state powers Saturday morning in the MHSAA Division 7 title game at Ford Field.

St. Francis and New Lothrop have met three previous teams, with the Hornets holding a 2-1 lead in the series. The Gladiators won the las meeting 35-14 in 2018.

“We’re feeling good about our chances,” St. Francis coach Josh Sellers said. “Not a lot of people are giving us much of a chance to win. Kind of a David and Goliath story and we’re the role of David and here we come”
