Hundreds Rally Outside Capitol For High School Sports

LANSING – Hundreds of student athletes, coaches, parents, and more crowded outside of the Capitol building in Lansing on Saturday.

The ‘Let Them Play’ rally was in protest of the postponement of contact winter sports, including basketball, wrestling, hockey, and cheer.

The emergency order that put a hold on high school athletics back in November, was extended to February 21. The three remaining fall sports at the time, football, volleyball, and swimming and diving, were able to finish out by being part of an antigen testing program.

Many coaching/sports associations across the state have spoken out asking for sports to start sooner than the end of February.

Earlier this week, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing to listen to testimonies by those affected.

On Friday, the MHSAA reaffirmed its commitment to play winter sports when current restrictions are lifted by the state health department.
