LSSU Men Ready to Get 2021 Season Started
The Lake Superior State men’s basketball team is set to tip off its 2021 season this weekend.
The Lakers will play an 18-game schedule, comprised entirely of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests.
The condensed schedule rans from Jan. 8 through Feb. 27 and includes eight two-game weekend slates against the same opponent.
LSSU’s 2021 roster features four players that call northern Michigan home, including sophomore guard Xander Okerlund (Glen Lake) and freshman guard Andy Soma (Traverse City West).
Redshirt senior Malek Adams returns to the court after missing the entire 2019-20 season due to injury. Adams averaged 16 points per game as a junior.
“I like our size at the guard position. We are long with Xander and Justin Fisher kind of playing at the point guard,” LSSU coach Steve Hettinga said. “A 6-foot-5 point guard and Xander being all of 6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6. We definitely have length at the guard position with guys that are tough and can play different positions. Certainly excited to have Malek Adams back off of that torn ACL from the year before. He’s an all-conference play two years back and certainly excited to have him back as a senior.”
The Lakers are looking to rebound from last year’s 12-16 mark. It was LSSU’s first losing campaign since the 2011-12 season.
LSSU tips off its season at home against Wayne State on Friday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. The two teams meet against at 1 p.m. Saturday.
