LSSU Women Tip-Off 2021 Season This Week
The Lake Superior State women’s basketball team will tip-off its 2021 season this week.
The Lakers will play an 18-game scheduled, comprised entirely of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests.
The condensed schedule rans from Jan. 8 through Feb. 27 and includes eight weekend two-game slates against the same opponent.
LSSU’s 2021 roster features seven northern Michigan natives, including sophomore transfer and Traverse City Central graduate Margot Woughter. Woughter averaged 12.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game during her only season at Indiana Wesleyan in 2018-19.
The Lakers are coming off their second straight eight-win campaign and graduate four seniors from last year’s team that went 8-19.
“We’ve got some days where it gets chippy and some days where you would think we’re playing a game the energy’s so high,” LSSU coach Brandon Lokken said. “That’s a real fun environment to be in and it makes going to the gym every day a lot of fun.”
Newberry native Taylor Bryant is one of three seniors on a roster that features nine underclassmen.
“I’m really excited for what I saw and how the energy in the gym is compared to the past years. Not saying the past years were bad, but being able to be in that atmosphere is really exciting,” Bryant said.
LSSU tips off its campaign at Wayne State at 6 p.m. Friday. The two teams meet against at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Lakers open the home portion of their schedule against Purdue Northwest Jan. 15-16.
