Michigan Athletics Put On Two-Week Pause After Surge in Positive COVID-19 Cases

ANN ARBOR — All University of Michigan athletics will be paused for two weeks starting Sunday, Jan. 24 following an order from the state health department after a surge in positive COVID-19 cases within the athletic department and several Michigan teams.

Per university sources, there were five confirmed cases of the new COVID-19 B.1.1.7 variant, with 15 more presumed positives throughout the athletic department.

The novel strain was first introduced at the beginning of the semester by a U-M athlete from the United Kingdom. 

Michigan men’s basketball upcoming schedule:

  • 1/27 at Penn State
  • 1/30 vs Indiana
  • 2/3 at Northwestern
  • 2/6 vs Michigan State

Michigan is currently 13-1 overall. Alone in first place in the Big Ten at 8-1. The Michigan women’s team is 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten.
