Red Wings Name Larkin the 37th Captain in Franchise History

The Detroit Red Wings announced Wednesday that center Dylan Larkin will be the team’s 37th captain in franchise history. Larkin is also the first Michigander and Detroit native to wear the letter ‘C’. Luke Glendening and Frans Nielsen will be alternate captains for the upcoming season, which starts on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Larkin has been an alternate captain since 2018-19. He will begin his sixth season with the Red Wings, and he has led Detroit in points over the last three seasons. Only six players have led the Red Wings in scoring for three straight seasons before Larkin: Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.

The Red Wings drafted Larkin in the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft with the 15th overall pick.

Detroit’s season begins on Thursday at home against the Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m.
